Silk(R) Chocolate Soymilk Now Best-Selling Drink in Chocolate Milk Category

Great Taste From Real, Dutch-Process Cocoa Helps Soymilk Leader's Half-Gallon Chocolate Offering Become Top Seller in Chocolate Milk Category

BOULDER, Colo., Jun 8, 2004 -- As it turns out, America's best- selling chocolate milk isn't milk at all. It's soymilk. Silk(R) Soymilk, to be precise.

Silk Soymilk's half-gallon Silk Chocolate is now America's single best- selling product in the chocolate milk category, according to a report published by grocery sales tracker Information Resources, Inc. The report, which analyzed grocery store sales for the 24-week period ending April 18 showed that Silk's half-gallon chocolate soymilk, with retail sales approaching $13 million, beat out offerings from Nesquik, Hershey's and others to earn the distinction.

And while the growing popularity of soymilk is hardly new -- Silk Soymilk is found in approximately 97 percent of grocery stores and 11 percent of homes -- the news that Silk Chocolate half gallons have become the best-selling chocolate milk or milk alternative shows that more people are drinking Silk Chocolate for its taste. With a smooth, creamy texture and a healthy dose of real, Dutch-process cocoa -- something missing from most chocolate milk brands -- many chocolate lovers are finding that Silk Soymilk makes the best tasting chocolate drink around.

"For a 'better-for-you' product to be the best-selling offering in an indulgent category is truly a remarkable feat," said Steve Demos, president and founder of White Wave, maker of Silk Soymilk. "But make no mistake, this is all about taste. With Silk Chocolate, we have demonstrated that if you make a good-for-you product taste great, people will buy it. Once people see how great a soymilk beverage can taste, they don't think twice about reaching for a glass of Silk."

Each eight-ounce glass of Silk Chocolate contains five grams of soy protein and 30 percent of the recommended daily allowance for calcium. In addition, Silk Chocolate contains 19 grams of sugar, compared to 23 grams for the average glass of chocolate milk. Like all Silk products, Silk Chocolate is made with 100 percent organic soybeans and organic sugar cane.

Silk Chocolate Soymilk is available in single serve, quarts and half gallons. Silk products are available at conventional grocery, mass merchandise and natural foods stores. The suggested retail price is $1.99 for a quart and $3.29 for a half gallon.

White Wave, Inc. ( ), a wholly owned subsidiary of Dean Foods (DF), was established in Boulder, Colo., in 1977. In 1996, White Wave introduced Silk, America's first refrigerated soymilk. Today, Silk is available in 11 flavors and is the No. 1 selling organic consumer packaged goods brand in the nation. White Wave's product offerings include Silk(R) Soymilk, SunSoy(R) Soymilk and the new TofuTown(TM) Tofu Tenders(TM) line of ready-to-eat tofu.
