Silliker provides chemical analysis to test contaminated orange juice imports

The food testing laboratory is now offering a screening for the fungicide carbendazim after the FDA announced that it would temporarily halt all imports of foreign orange juice due to potential contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on 1/11/12 that it would temporarily halt all imports of foreign orange juice due to potential contamination by the fungicide Carbendazim (Benzimidazole family).  FDA concerns are linked to commercial orange juice and juice concentrate samples that tested positive for the fungicide Carbendazim, currently an unlawful pesticide residue in the US.  Orange juice imports will be detained until the FDA conducts a thorough investigation regarding the presence of Carbendazim. Any imported orange juice shipments testing positive for the fungicide would be denied entry.

Silliker can provide state-of-the-art chemical analysis for Carbendazim in orange juice utilizing high performance liquid chromatography (LC-MS/MS). Detection level is 1 ppb with test results in seven (7) business days.
Manufacturers of juice and beverages containing juice are encouraged to screen for this fungicide which could potentially create a public health risk.
