The Starch Blocker Diet Now Available As Paperback

KEARNY, NJ, APRIL 26, 2005— The Starch Blocker Diet, a popular book that details how to lose weight by reducing the amount of calories absorbed from starchy foods, is now available as a paperback from Avon, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. The book has been available nationally as a hardback since 2003.

The Starch Blocker Diet describes a new strategy that utilizes an extract of the white bean, Phase 2 Starch Neutralizer, developed by Pharmachem Laboratories Inc., to reduce the absorption of starch calories in the body and promote weight loss. The ingredient works by inhibiting the enzyme alpha amylase, which may prevent the digestion of complex carbohydrates, without affecting the absorption of vital nutrients or producing any harmful side effects. The book details the science behind this strategy and how to maximize its effectiveness.

The book was written by Steven Rosenblatt, MD, PhD, a practicing physician and noted authority in the area of integrative medicine, and Cameron Stauth, an experienced medical writer.

According to Dr. Rosenblatt, the legume-derived ingredient is a valuable complement to today’s low-carb lifestyles.

“Because of the ingredient’s ability to block the absorption of some of the calories from starchy foods, dieters don’t have to eliminate carbohydrates from their diet,” he explains. “This approach recognizes the power of the natural human desire to eat, and does not try to subvert, alter, or deny this urge. This is the first realistic weight management program that relies on the power of science, rather than upon the willpower of people.”

The eating plan advocates a three-step approach to shed pounds, boost energy and keep people of all ages eating healthy for the long-term:

• Step 1: Redistributing calories – not simply limiting them
• Step 2: Taking emotional control over food -- obliterating cravings and mood swings
• Step 3: Exercising – starch blockers supercharge exercise by significantly increasing the body’s ability to burn fat through physical activity.

Dr. Rosenblatt also shares stories of patients who used this method to not only lose weight, but to gain a better outlook on life. He answers frequently asked questions regarding safe, effective weight loss with the help of his program.

The book also contains at-a-glance charts of starch-rich foods and their calorie ratings, plus sample weight-loss and maintenance plans for people of various weights and activity levels. In addition, more than 100 recipes are included.
