CHICAGO, IL, OCT. 10, 2003--Jay Udani, M.D., medical director, Northridge Hospital Integrative Medicine Program, Los Angeles, CA, today presented the results of his randomized, controlled trial: “Use of White Bean Extract for Weight loss,” during a research workshop at the 53rd Annual Obesity & Associated Conditions Symposium, sponsored by the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.
According to Dr. Udani, patients who took a concentrated starch neutralizer extracted from the white kidney bean, lost nearly a half pound per week (3.8 lbs. over eight weeks), on average, compared with the placebo group which lost 1.65 lbs., on average. Patients on the starch neutralizer also lost 1.47 inches around their waists, on average, compared with the placebo group which lost an average of 1.07 inches. These results were based on a 27-person, double-blind, placebo-controlled study utilizing Phase 2® starch neutralizer and did not reach statistical significance.
“While not statistically significant, the results are encouraging,” said Udani. “When used in conjunction with a sensible diet and exercise, Phase 2 may complement a healthy weight loss program.”
“One interesting result of the study was the impact that the starch neutralizer had on triglycerides, a form of bad cholesterol,” continued Udani. “There was a 26-point drop in triglyceride levels, on average, for patients taking the starch neutralizer, while those on placebo averaged only an 8 point drop in triglyceride levels. Again, while not statistically significant, the difference between the two groups was encouraging.”
Those patients on the starch neutralizer also reported a 13% increase in energy compared with baseline, while those on placebo reported no improvement in this area. These results did not reach statistical significance, however this remains interesting as the starch neutralizer is not a stimulant. Energy levels were measured using a 10-point scale.
No significant adverse effects from the starch neutralizer were reported by any of the patients participating in the study.
