MARSHALL, CA - Straus Family Creamery, California’s organic dairy and creamery, and Cowgirl Creamery, artisan cheese makers, won high praise and several awards for their products from the prestigious American Cheese Society, the world’s largest and most influential competition for American-made specialty cheeses.
Celebrating the cheese makers’ craft, a culinary art form that has taken the specialty food world by storm, the American Cheese Society competition awarded Straus Organic Whole Milk Plain Yogurt with First Place in the Yogurts Made from Cow’s Milk Category. Their European-Style Unsalted (sweet) Butter with 85% butterfat won 3rd Place in the Unsalted Butter category.
Straus Whole Milk Yogurt is a uniquely creamy and pourable yogurt that tastes unlike any other on the market. The European-Style yogurt is made using reverse osmosis, condensing the milk slightly, instead of adding the usual milk powder. The yogurt is made with just organic milk and live cultures without any thickeners.
Straus European-Style Butter with a minimum 85% butterfat content is made in an old-fashioned 1950’s butter churn in small 160 gallon batches. Straus butter has just been selected to be part of the national Whole Foods Authentic Food Artisan (AFA) program, which celebrates organic and artisanally crafted products from the around the world.
Cowgirl Creamery, winners of the Best of Show at the 2003 competition for their Red Hawk, a washed rind cheese, won awards in several categories including 1st place for their Mt. Tam and 2nd place for their Pierce Point, Creme Fraiche and Fromage Blanc.
Cowgirl’s handcrafted cheeses are made exclusively with Straus milk.
“It was Straus milk that inspired us to make our cheese because it is so rich and complex”, says Peggy Smith, co-owner of Cowgirl Creamery. “Good cheese simply must start with good milk.”
