SupplyExpo and Nutracon: Where the industry comes together

In this show preview, you'll find all the last-minute updates to the education programmes, special events and Nutracon — along with a listing of selected exhibitors to help you plan your show schedule.

SupplyExpo is the place where the industry meets to buy, sell, learn and network. Because it is co-located with Natural Products Expo West, visitors can find the entire value chain — from ingredients to finished products — under the mammoth roof of the Anaheim Convention Center.

Attendees will find there a record 1,800 exhibitors and 3,000 booths. SupplyExpo offers free education seminars on key business issues, including global ingredients sourcing, regulatory and GMP compliance, sustainable packaging, and new markets and trends. And Nutracon, the industry's premier scientific conference, offers exclusive presentations on the newest science in the industry's growing categories. This year that includes synbiotics, weight-loss ingredients, antioxidants, probiotics, cognitive function and organics.

The NutrAward: celebrating innovation
Three companies and their products are the finalists for the coveted 10th Annual NutrAward. The award was created to reward and recognize companies that are investing in rigorous and measurable scientific studies to prove the efficacy of their proprietary ingredients or technologies. The finalists and winner are selected using a weighted vote by the selection committee, as well as by a vote of Nutracon attendees, based on how well the ingredient or product meets the defined criteria, including:
Scientific merit
Market potential
Ability to increase market credibility

The finalists are:

Core Naturals, for Salba, a registered variety of the mint family grown exclusively in Peru. The nutrient-dense grain is said to lower cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetics, lower C-reactive protein (a marker for inflammation and heart disease), and help balance blood-sugar levels.

Kyowa Hakko USA, the US division of the Japanese biotech company, for Lumistor L-Hydroxyproline, a new anti-ageing cosmeceutical ingredient. A naturally derived amino acid, its benefits include skin moisture retention and proliferation of skin cells.

Quality of Life Labs, for Oligonol, an innovative antioxidant and anti-ageing nutritional supplement that contains oligomerised polyphenols with a low molecular weight, thus making them easier to absorb and more bio-available.

Nutracon attendees can review the finalists and vote for their choice to win the award at Nutracon. The NutrAward will be presented at Nutracon on Thursday, 13 March at 4:00pm in the California Ballroom at the Anaheim Hilton Hotel.

DSMNew developments from title sponsor DSM
DSM Nutritional Products is the world's premier manufacturer of bulk vitamins, carotenoids and custom nutrient blends. As the title sponsor for Nutracon/SupplyExpo, the company is launching three new products at the show. Bob Berman, a DSM senior marketing manager for new business development, says, "This is an unusually high number of launches for a single show, but we're doing it because we believe SupplyExpo is an extremely important show.?

Wednesday, 11:00-11:45am; Nutracon science breakout session
In support of two of these launches, DSM is presenting several seminars. The first is "InsuVital: evidence-based innovation in blood-glucose management.? Dr Phillip Rijken, global head of nutritional science for DSM Nutritional Products, will discuss the science surrounding this natural, extensively hydrolysed casein consisting of bio-active peptides that work with the body to release insulin after intake.

Friday, 10:30-11:30am; room 207D
A second seminar, featuring a product DSM actually launched last year, is titled "TensGuard: a new milk-derived tripeptide to help control blood pressure.? It features Peter Willis, senior marketing manager, new business development, discussing what the company calls 'today's highest-potency tripeptide,' which it says is ideal for food and supplements formulation.

Friday, 4:00-5:00pm; room 205A
The third is "Resvida: high performance resveratrol for today's forward-thinking manufacturers and marketers.? Frank DeJiannem, a senior marketing manager for new business development, will turn the spotlight on this product.

The company's latest innovation, I-Flex, a patented rose-hips powder, will be the featured ingredient at the DSM Supply Expo booth, number 738.

Selected SupplyExpo seminars:
Digesting the nuances of GMP compliance
Friday, March 14, 2:45-4:00pm, room 207B
As the deadline for large companies to comply with the new GMPs draws near, the need to understand the nuances becomes ever more important. A diverse panel of experts will offer a unique perspective, looking at compliance from a problems or pitfalls level, rather than as a justification for the need of standards. In the absence of FDA leadership and, consequently, the lack of standards and reference materials, the panel will answer your most urgent questions about emerging issues and practical strategies.
Speakers: Byron Johnson, Nutrilite; Daniel Fabricant, PhD, vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs, Natural Products Association, Washington, DC; Ed Wyszumiala, manager, NSF International; Michael McGuffin, president, American Herbal Products Association

Rev up your business: sustainable packaging as a driving force
Saturday, March 15, 1:00-2:15pm
A panel discussion on thought-provoking ideas from three industry leaders about CPG market advantages by leveraging strategic packaging-sustainability efforts. Each will focus on a specific element of the product life cycle, manufacturing, trade relationship and consumer/brand participation.
Speakers: Bruce Cummings, senior design manager in the global strategic brand-design group, Colgate Palmolive; Kevin Williams, brand strategist, Pure Branding; Ron Sasine, vice president of retail channel management for MeadMestvaco's CSG Health and Beauty Group
