Tetra Pak and Horizon Organic Launch First Single-Serve Organic Milk in the United States

Aseptic technology enhances benefits of organic milk, starts new trend in convenient dairy beverages

VERNON HILLS, Ill.— April 9, 2002— Tetra Pak, the leader in providing innovative packaging in the specialty beverage market, announces the release of the first ever single-serve organic milk in the US, which is packaged in the Tetra Prisma Aseptic carton. Tetra Pak and Horizon Organic released the “Organic Milk-on-the-Moo-ve” product line to retailers in January 2002, providing consumers with a convenient, healthy and original product.

“The continued market growth for both organic milk and single-serve milk was the catalyst for this product launch,” said Chuck Marcy, CEO, Horizon Organic. “We chose to work with Tetra Pak because they offered us an innovative package and a professional partnership for a successful product launch.”

Tetra Pak demonstrated to Horizon Organic that the Tetra Prisma Aseptic was the clear choice for Horizon Organic’s new product introduction. Since Horizon Organic’s milk contains no pesticides, hormones or antibiotics, Tetra Pak’s aseptic cartons were the best match because they allow liquid foods to be packaged without any additives or preservatives. Products marketed in aseptic packaging may be merchandised and stored ambient or chilled, and are shelf-stable for several months. Tetra Pak’s cartons are also recyclable.

Horizon Organic’s target demographic for “Organic Milk-on-the-Moo-ve” is families with children of all ages. The unique octagonal shape of the Tetra Prisma appeals to both kids and adults and is a fun and functional product. Differentiating itself from other beverage packages on store shelves, the Tetra Prisma’s grippable shape and metallicized graphic capabilities extend Horizon Organic’s cutting-edge image of being the first to market single-serve organic milk.

Horizon Organic worked in Tetra Pak’s Pilot Plant in Denton, Texas to test and run lines of the new product. After the test market phase in specialty retail chains, Horizon Organic and Tetra Pak worked with the co-packer, Steuben Foods in Elma, New York, for product roll-out.

Already introduced in Starbucks nationwide, Whole Foods and Wild Oats, grocery stores and specialty retailers will also carry reduced-fat “Organic Milk-on-the-Moo-ve” in four flavors—plain, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.
