Lacey, WA – October 21, 2004 – Unigen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading research and development company and supplier of proprietary, biologically active plant-derived ingredients to the natural products and pharmaceutical industries, has announced its membership in the Utah Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The UNPA is a Utah-based organization formed 13 years ago to represent the interests of leading dietary supplement companies. Initially geared toward supporting the $3 billion dietary supplement industry in Utah, the organization has since expanded to include 15 natural healthcare member companies from around the U.S. in what has been cited as a $42 billion dollar industry.
“The initial purpose for founding the Utah Natural Products Alliance was to address legislative issues regarding dietary supplements, particularly during the conceptual stages and ultimate development of the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA),” said UNPA Executive Director and founder, Loren Israelsen. “This important role continues with our devotion to supporting the dietary supplement industry in maintaining quality and safety of supplements, as well as achieving even higher scientific standards.”
According to Derek Hall, President and Chief Executive Officer of Unigen Pharmaceuticals, “Member companies such as Unigen share a deep commitment to conducting scientific research on our ingredients and products to maintain high quality Industry standards. Continued and expanded research can lead to a broader usage and acceptance of herbal and dietary supplements.”
In addition to the UNPA's role as an effective voice in Washington, D.C., along with its ongoing collaboration with Utah's senior Senator, Orrin Hatch (R), the organization works closely with high-level industry executives to keep them informed of critical industry developments, important public health issues, regulations and scientific developments. In particular, the UNPA is focused on full and proper implementation and enforcement of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). The organization also works closely with government and private organizations such as FDA, FTC, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), the American Botanical Council (ABC) and the Office of Dietary Supplements within the National Institutes of Health.
Other UNPA members include Pharmanex, Metagenics, USANA Health Sciences, Cornerstone Nutritional Labs, Nature’s Way, Capsugel and Sabinsa, among others.
