Lacey, WA – July 22, 2005 – Unigen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading research and development facility and supplier of proprietary, biologically active plant-derived ingredients to the natural products and pharmaceutical industries, has announced that it will present research data in an oral presentation and two posters during the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) at Oregon State University July 23 – 27. Unigen is also a sponsor of this year’s event.
“The American Society of Pharmacognosy is one of the world’s most preeminent scientific organizations focusing on natural product research, and Unigen is honored to play a role in the success of this year’s event,” said Unigen’s Chief Science Officer, Dr. Qi Jia. “With a PhytoLogix® library containing more than 5,000 medicinal plants, 125,000 fractions, extracts and compounds, along with our state-of-the-art high-throughput purification, dereplication and screening technology, Unigen is excited to share its recent research results with the scientists attending the conference.”
The oral presentation will be made by Dr. Yuan Zhao, who is Director of Discovery and Screening of Unigen USA, located at the company’s corporate headquarters in Lacey, Washington. Dr. Zhao will disclose the novel mechanism of action of a proprietary ingredient called Univestin®, which is a plant-based, bioactive, natural ingredient addressing joint health and mobility. Dr. Zhao discovered that Univestin® down-regulated the expression of genes of multiple cytokines associated with soreness, mobility and joint health. Earlier this year, Univestin®, won the New Hope Natural Media NutrAward 2005 as the best new ingredient of 2004.
Two poster presentations by Unigen will also take place during the ASP meeting. This will include a report of a novel natural source of policosanol for maintaining healthy blood lipid profiles. An in vivo study of policosanols at Unigen Korea showed a statistically significant increase of high density lipids (HDL), the good cholesterol cited for cardiovascular health. Recently, Unigen received two U.S. patents for this policosanol ingredient. The second poster presentation will report on the development of a quality control method to identify the adulteration of a hepatotoxic compound, Teucrin A, in the extract of Chinese skullcap.
Unigen is committed to maintaining high quality standards for all of its proprietary ingredients. These poster presentations are based on the research efforts of Unigen’s scientists Dr. Jifu Zhao and Mei-Feng Hong of Unigen USA in collaboration with scientists at Unigen, Korea.
