Unigen(TM) Partners With Botanical Liaisons

Ethnobotanical Consulting To Enhance Unigen’s Discovery Platform

BROOMFIELD, CO, January 27, 2003 --Botanical Liaisons LLC, an ethnobotanical consulting firm, and UnigenTM Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (UPI), a leading natural products research and development facility and proprietary ingredients supplier, have reached an agreement to study traditional medicine and the discovery of new products in various countries including Belize, Cameroon, Peru, Tanzania and the United States.

"It is strategically important for Unigen to work with a company like Botanical Liaisons with solid expertise in ethnobotanical research,” stated Qi Jia, vice president of scientific affairs for UnigenTM Pharmaceuticals, Inc. “The plant collection program brings ecological, economical and cultural diversities to Unigen’s discovery platform and the addition of Botanical Liaisons will extend our reach.”

Botanical Liaisons will identify, collect and supply medicinal plants with voucher specimens and traditional information to UPI for research and product development. In turn, UPI will screen putative plant actives for biological activities, isolate and purify the actives to homogeneity and develop drug leads and commercial products.

“We are delighted to work with Unigen,” said Trish Flaster, executive director of Botanical Liaisons. “Botanical Liaisons has long-term experience working with traditional people in product development to create a sustainable supply of unique ingredients. The scientific research program at UPI will offer an innovative pathway to economic and environmental development of successful value-based botanical products.”

UPI and Botanical Liaisons comply with the terms of the “Convention on Biological Diversity” that include benefit sharing and recognition of the value of traditional knowledge. Both companies will also exercise a comprehensive approach to conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants indigenous to the source countries.
