Ethical Naturals Inc. (ENI) has announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a patent covering their method for manufacturing high antioxidant extracts from grapes. The process broadly covers extracts from any part of the grape that exceed an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of 10,000 µmol TE/gram.
“We filed the patent application several years ago when the concept of antioxidant ORAC value was obscure,” says Cal Bewicke, President of ENI. “In the meantime, interest in antioxidants from natural sources has grown exponentially, so the timing of the patent is excellent for us” states Bewicke.
ENI has been selling their patent-pending antioxidant ingredient for several years. Named ORAC-15M™, the extract is highly concentrated and is especially rich in polyphenols and other naturally occurring grape antioxidant compounds. The result is a product which is one of the highest known ORAC value functional ingredients available (ORAC value of over 15,000 µmol TE/gram), and also contains over 80 percent polyphenols.
The ORAC-15M™ extract is now widely used to add scientifically defined levels of natural antioxidants and polyphenols to supplements and multivitamin type products. It’s also GRAS affirmed, and is used in every major beverage category for the same reason: to add defined antioxidant value.
The ingredient is ideal for both beverage and supplements applications because the technology for manufacturing the extract produces a final material that is highly soluble and potent, but uniquely still has a very low taste and color profile.
“This high ORAC value grape extract is now a key product in our range of specialty antioxidant ingredients,” adds Bewicke. “ Supplement companies and beverage formulators prefer using it since the benefits of grape extracts are so well known, and the ORAC-15M™ ingredient, offers sound science to back a range of health benefits and label claims.”
The extract is also a key ingredient in ENI’s multi-fruit extract, Standardized Fruit Blend (SFB®), manufactured from nine different exotic fruits, including: Goji, Bilberry, Blueberry, Chokeberry, Cranberry, Mangosteen, Apple, Pomegranate and Grape. SFB® is standardized to contain 40 percent Polyphenols, and has an ORAC value of 7,500 µmol TE/gram. It’s also GRAS affirmed, and widely used in both supplements and beverages.
Both ORAC-15M™ and SFB® incorporate the same patented technology in their manufacturing process allowing supplement and beverage manufacturers to significantly boost quality in their antioxidant categories by using natural ingredients backed by legitimate science.
“Nature Verified By Science is our key founding mission statement. These products, now patent-protected, are clear examples of ENI’s mission in action,” ends Bewicke.
