Virgo Announces Details of SupplySide East Expanded Education Program

Top FDA Official Presenting an Update on Actions and Agenda
John M. Taylor, the associate commissioner for Regulatory Affairs at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will be the Featured Speaker on May 5. Taylor oversees the Office of Regulatory Affairs’ headquarters and field operations.

Double Session Focusing on NIH’s Methods and Reference Materials Program for Dietary Supplements
This session will examine the current status of federally-funded efforts to develop analytical methods and reference materials for dietary supplements. The panel will provide an overview of the program, key elements of the FDA/AOAC and NIST contracts for development of analytical methods and standard reference materials, the implementation of these contracts, NCCAM's policy on characterization of raw materials for clinical trials and Single Laboratory Validation (SLV) methods.
The session includes panelists from: Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health (NIH); Office of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, NIH; AOAC International; Analytical Chemistry Division, National Institute of Standards and Technology; Biological Constituents Branch, Division of Natural Products, FDA; ChromaDex Analytics; and Medallion Laboratories Division, General Mills.

NSF/NFL Unveiling Athletic Banned Substance Program
This session is designed to help ingredient and contract manufacturers, finished product manufacturers and athletes learn about the importance of certification. The Official National Football League (NFL)/National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) Supplement Certification Program, monitored through NSF International, the first step in a Banned Substance Certification Program, will be discussed.

Exploring Low Carb Opportunities
Examine consumer trends and market opportunities for low carb supplements, nutraceuticals and ingredient-based applications. Steve French, managing partner at the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI), will explore consumer attitudes, behavior, product usage patterns and lifestyle factors based on newly conducted research and analysis from NMI’s annual Health & Wellness Trends Database.

Leading Associations to Provide Industry Update
Moderated by Marc Ullman, partner, Ullman, Shapiro and Ullman, subjects to be addressed include GMPs (good manufacturing practices), legislative threats to the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act (DSHEA), and key issues affecting botanicals. This double session on May 7 will feature Michael McGuffin, president, American Herbal Products Association (AHPA); David Seckman, executive director/chief executive officer, National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA); and Annette Dickinson, Ph.D., president, Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN).

NIH Researcher Assesses Omega-3 Fatty Acid Studies
In 2002, the Office of Dietary Supplements at NIH began work on a major assessment of the health benefits of consuming omega-3 fatty acids. In this May 5 session, a comprehensive review of all the relevant research on omega-3 fatty acids as it relates to cardiovascular disease will be discussed. The speaker will be Joseph Lau, M.D., internist and professor of medicine at the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies the Tufts-New England Medical Center.
