VMI Nutrition of Salt Lake City was recently recognized in Nutrition Business Journal and Utah Business Magazine for its outstanding growth and entrepreneurship. While many industries continue to struggle during the present economic downturn, there are companies specializing in dietary supplements and functional food manufacturing who continue to grow at double-digit rates. VMI Nutrition is one such company.
Nutrition Business Journal, which provides market data and analysis of the $140 billion global nutrition industry, has awarded VMI Nutrition with the “Mid-Size Company Growth Award” for 2011, while Utah Business Magazine has recognized the company as a finalist for the 2012 “Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year” award for the Utah region, an award that recognizes entrepreneurs who show excellence and extraordinary success in areas that include innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their business and community.
VMI Nutrition is a contract manufacturer specializing in the formulation, blending, packaging and testing of nutritional consumer goods, with a clientele ranging from leading consumer brands to small niche start-up companies.
After acquiring Vance’s Manufacturing, Inc. in 2006, co-owners Bruce Remund and Jeff Reynolds multiplied company revenues and employees (now numbering over 400) nearly ten-fold. They expanded the company focus from custom powders for local businesses to developing, producing and testing powders for global nutritional brands.
VMI has made a great impression, according to Loren Israelsen, Executive Director of the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA), a trade association of dietary supplement and functional food companies. “It’s really quite unusual to have a true one-stop shop. Some companies will tell you that they do it all, but they farm out some of the work and you don’t know it. These guys really do it all. We are proud to have VMI as a leading member of UNPA.”
Furthermore, in 2008 VMI founded its sister company Genysis Nutritional Labs, which employs chemists and microbiologists to facilitate accurate analytical testing for both VMI products and those manufactured by third parties. In addition, VMI houses its own lab to formulate new bases and flavors for customers.
VMI principals Remund and Reynolds left successful jobs in corporate America in order to purchase and develop their own company. They quickly developed a unique synergy that helped propel VMI Nutrition into the leading health sciences company it has become; their continued work and dedication will most certainly ensure future growth.
