Yoplait Combines Vitamin D and Calcium in all Yogurt and Fresh Cheese Products

More than 50 per cent of Canadians are not achieving adequate daily levels of Vitamin D and calcium - nutrients critical to good health when combined - despite recommendations in the revised Canadian Food Guide. In an effort to make it easier for Canadians of all ages to achieve the recommended Vitamin D and calcium intake levels, Yoplait has launched an initiative to add these elements to its full range of yogurt and fresh cheese products.

Dr. Reinhold Vieth, a professor in the University of Toronto's departments of Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, and
Director of Bone and Mineral Laboratory Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, says the benefits of Vitamin D are well researched and documented.

"One key role of Vitamin D is to help the body absorb the calcium in food for the development of strong bones and teeth; the two work together to prevent skeletal diseases that result in defects that cause weak bones and muscles," he says. "Working together the combination of both vitamin D and calcium across the range of Yoplait products provides Canadians of all ages with easy choices with which to increase the nutrient effectiveness of their diet on a daily basis. This makes it easy to match the new vitamin D targets of Canada's Food Guide."

Know your needs at every age

For Canadians who suffer through long, grey winters and whose bodies are therefore unable to produce enough Vitamin D, fortified products are a necessity. People of all ages must ensure they receive a sufficient daily intake of calcium and Vitamin D, and these needs vary according to each person's age and physical condition.
