Cooking Up College Scholarships

ShrimpCalling teen chefs! The National High School Recipe Contest provides an opportunity to win thousands of dollars in college scholarships.

Each year, the world's largest culinary school, Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, invites high school seniors to submit original recipes for a healthful family dinner or dessert. The recipes must meet the nutrition guidelines of the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association, co-sponsors of the contest.

Each competition is judged separately by a panel of food professionals on the basis of taste, cost effectiveness, nutritional value, originality, creativity, presentation and appearance. The grand prize winner in each category is awarded a $5,000 renewable tuition scholarship to Johnson & Wales. Last year, more than $200,000 in scholarships were awarded. The contest begins March 17, 2001. Deadline for entries is January 26, 2001.
