Solaray Saw Palmetto
STUDY CLAIM: Solaray saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) use resulted in a significant improvement of lower urinary tract symptoms compared with placebo.

PUBLISHED: Gerber GS, et al. Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of saw palmetto in men with lower urinary tract symptoms. Urology 2001 Dec;58(6):960-4.

ABSTRACT: In this double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study, researchers selected 85 men diagnosed with urinary retention to take 160mg twice/day saw palmetto or placebo for six months. The saw palmetto used was Solaray (a fluid extract standardised to between 85 per cent and 95 per cent fatty acids and sterols), provided by Nutraceutical Corp.

Using the International Prostate Symptom Score to measure improvement, researchers noted that the mean score decreased from 16.7 to 12.3 in the saw palmetto group compared with 15.8 to 13.6 in the placebo group. More research is needed for scientists to determine the mechanism that makes saw palmetto effective in treating urinary tract conditions in men.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: Nutraceutical Corp.'s saw palmetto is available as a raw ingredient for gender-generic formulations: promoting prostate health in men and reducing pelvic congestion in women.

Hawaii Macadamia Nut Association
STUDY CLAIM: A diet rich in monounsaturated fat from macadamia nuts (37 per cent energy from fat) lowers cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels.

PUBLISHED: Curb JD, et al. Serum lipid effects of a high-monounsaturated-fat diet based on macadamia nuts. Arch Intern Med 2000 Apr 24;160(8):1154-8.

ABSTRACT: Researchers at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, conducted a randomised, crossover trial of three, 30-day diets in 30 volunteers, ages 18 to 53 years, to examine how a diet rich in monounsaturated fat from macadamia nuts affected serum lipid levels. (The nuts for this study were provided by MacFarms of Hawaii.)

One group of participants ate a traditional American diet, another followed the American Heart Association Step I diet, and a third ate a monounsaturated fat-based diet rich in macadamia nuts.

Results showed a significant reduction in cholesterol levels after eating the diet rich in macadamia nuts. The mean total cholesterol level after the typical American diet was 201 mg/dL, 193 mg/dL after the Step I diet and 191 mg/dL after the macadamia nut diet. (Above 200 mg/dL is considered a coronary heart disease risk.)

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: Whole macadamia nuts and extracts are used in cooking oils, butter, breads and cosmeceuticals.

STUDY CLAIM: The combination of soy and alfalfa phytoestrogen extracts (Nutrilite Protein Powder) and acerola cherry extract (Bio C Plus) on rabbit endothelial aortic cells suggests that these extracts may lower the concentrations of phytoestrogens required for antioxidant activity in postmenopausal women.

PUBLISHED: Hwang J, et al. Soy and alfalfa phytoestrogen extracts become potent low-density lipoprotein antioxidants in the presence of acerola cherry extract. J Agric Food Chem 2001;49:308-14.

ABSTRACT: Researchers probed the antioxidant activity of a phytoestrogen extract derived from soy and alfalfa. Soy and alfalfa extracts, combined with acerola cherry extract inhibited copper-mediated oxidation in male rabbit aortic endothelial cells. Researchers attributed the protective effects to the flavonoids in soy and alfalfa, combined with ascorbic acid in acerola cherry extract, which may act synergistically as antioxidants. This effect may be caused by the "peroxidolitic" action of ascorbic acid, which facilitates the copper-dependent decomposition of LDL peroxides to nonradical products. The phytoestrogens also stabilise the LDL structure and suppress propagation of radical chain reactions.

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS: Bio C Plus is available in 250mg tablet form. Nutrilite Protein Powder is an unflavoured, unsweetened, powdered soy and milk-protein product designed to be added to foods and liquids.
