Study Indicates Inhibitory Effect of Fucoidan On MMP-1 Expression Via Protein and mRNA Assay in Human Skin Fibroblasts

Research published in Biol. Pharm. Bull. 31(2) 284—289 (2008) entitled “Fucoidan Inhibits UVB-Induced MMP-1 Expression in Human Skin Fibroblasts” involved an investigation of the inhibitory effects of Fucoidan on MMP-1 expression by various in vitro experiments and elucidated the pathways of inhibition.

This study demonstrated the inhibitory effect of Fucoidan on MMP-1 expression via protein and mRNA assay. Also, the researchers indicated that Fucoidan may prevent UVB-induced MMP-1 expression by inhibiting the UVB-induced activation of the ERK signaling pathway. Therefore, we suggest that Fucoidan should be viewed as a potential agent for preventing and treating skin photoaging.
