There?s something fishy going on
Consumers looking for a nice, big piece of salmon could have an easy time of it soon if a Canadian company gets its wish. They just better not mind the fish?s genetic alterations. Aqua Bounty Technologies, based in Newfoundland, applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration four years ago for permission to sell salmon that has been genetically modified to grow several times faster than normal. The company filed a similar petition with Health Canada in December. The company plans to sell only sterile females, so even if they escape their pens, they would not be able to mate with wild salmon. In a BBC report last March, Dr. Garth Fletcher, president and CEO of Aqua Bounty, said he expected FDA approval and subsequent test marketing in restaurants perhaps as early as 2005, and commercial sales two to three years later.
The soy of cooking

Pigments prove fruitful for health
Anthocyanins, the pigments that color cherries and blackberries, may stave off diabetes, according to recent research in which they increased insulin production in animals by 50 percent. ?It is possible that consumption of cherries and other fruits containing these compounds could have a significant impact on insulin levels in humans,? said lead study author Muralee Nair. The results suggest that the pigment could be useful in controlling blood-sugar levels in those who already have type 2 diabetes, and in preventing its onset in others. The study was published on the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry?s Web site Dec. 17, 2004.
