It’s real. One of the world's major kale seed suppliers, the Netherlands’ Bejo Seeds, told the Daily Mail it has run out of every kind of the trendy vegetable and farmers across Australia are struggling to keep up with kale demand.
The leafy green has become a victim of its own popularity over the past few years, way beyond trendy green food accessory, reports fooddive.com.
“Kale has moved well beyond trend into something entirely different—a sort of global phenomenon where the worlds of health, celebrities, organics, urban farming, green smoothies, and Dr. Oz all collide,” reports the site.
The editors of Modern Farmer are not as panicked (then again, they probably grow their own and have silos stashed away!). “We do admit that it is unclear whether these kale-sized ripples will truly be felt around the globe,” they write. “Nor is this the first time a kale shortage has threatened to harry our shores. Back in April, a particularly resilient pest attacked the U.S. kale crop, to the point where some specialists believed the country’s supply could be completely destroyed by June. Rumors of kale shortages have haunted your local CSA for years. But as always, it is better to be safe, than without kale, so it may be in your best interests to diversify your vegetable portfolio.”
Or simply stock up. Because you can now find the stuff in everything from popcorn and brownies to soda and jerky, there are plenty of ways you can stock a kale stash for your underground bunker.
