Fruit Sales Soar
Rapidly expanding fresh fruit and ingredients supplier JO SIMS in the UK has restructured its business to create a dedicated ingredients division, prompted by an explosion in the sales of fruit ingredients. Lee Doleman has been appointed to a new role as general manager of the ingredients division, which now represents 22 per cent of the company's business. The company says that combining sales, marketing, customer service and technical resources into one business unit will enable it to tighten up stock control and order processing, as well as manage the supplier and consumer better.
Organic And Kosher
The US NUTRACEUTICALS new supercritical fluid extracts manufacturing facility in Eustis, Florida, has been certified as an FVO IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements) compliant organic processor. It has also been certified kosher by Kosher Supervision of America (KSA). The company notes that it also is compliant with the new US Department of Agriculture National Organic Program standards.
Kinoko Goes Retail
The former recipient of the Nutracon Best New Product award for their ingredient AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound), QUALITY OF LIFE LABS, has signed on eight new distributors to provide greater retail availability for Kinoko brand AHCC, a patented blend of medicinal mushrooms. Following preliminary success with Kinoko in the marketplace, the company is making it more readily available to consumers. Clinical studies on this Japanese extract have shown it supports a healthy immune system by improving the number and function of immune system cells.
Treating dry eyes is the work of BIOSYNTRX, an ophthalmic company that manufactures nutraceutical products that support optimal eye and body health. The company has launched a 10-site clinical trial on its patent-pending systemic treatment for dry eye syndrome. BioTears Oral GelCaps was formulated following the most recent research in lipid metabolism and is designed to control the systemic inflammation associated with dry eye syndrome. The product has been shown to inhibit the inflammatory process as well as the growth of pathogens in the tear film, which is particularly important to the contact lens wearer.
A Bone To Pick
GLANBIA NUTRITIONALS INC has won two IDFA (International Dairy Foods Association) Achieving Excellence Mark-eting Awards-overall best direct mail piece and first place for best print ad.
The direct mail piece, which promoted Provon whey protein isolate, generated great interest and was a key driver in increasing consumer awareness. The print ad featured Glanbia Nutritional's signature tagline in North and South America trade publications, "If you think all calcium is the same, we've got a bone to pick with you."
The awards were presented at the SmartMarketing Conference in March in Tampa, Florida. The International Dairy Foods Association's Achieving Excellence Awards annually honor the dairy industry's best marketing and advertising efforts.
SoyLife from ACATRIS
will be the focus of a US Department of Agriculture-sponsored two-year, controlled study of 400 multi-ethnic postmenopausal women. The multi-site study is expected to determine the safety, efficacy and optimal dosage of isoflavone therapy in reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women.
One-third of these women will receive a placebo; one-third will receive isoflavone therapy at 90mg/ day; and the remaining one-third will receive isoflavone therapy at 120mg/ day. The study is aimed at ensuring results are representative of postmenopausal women in the US and a study goal is to educate the public on the benefits of soy.
Lallemand Heads To Memphis
LALLEMAND/AMERICAN YEAST'S newly constructed facility in Memphis, Tennessee, opened in February, adding significant production capacity to better meet the growing demand for yeast and yeast-based products. The Roland Chagnon Yeast Plant is named after Lallemand's president, Jean Chagnon, who died recently. The company chose Memphis because of transportation efficiencies, excellent infrastructure and local support. Lallemand also operates yeast plants in Montreal, Canada; Baltimore, Maryland; Bakersfield, California; and several European locations including Austria, Germany and Estonia.
Increasing Oil Supplies
Houston-based OMEGA PROTEIN announced it will build a new fish oil processing facility at its Reedville, Virginia plant, increasing its ability to meet the growing demand for this oil with production capability of 100 metric tons per day, more than triple current capacity. The food-grade facility will allow the company to refine, bleach, winterise and deodorise its menhaden fish oil. The facility will be complete with automated packaging and refrigerated on-site storage capacity, along with a fully equipped lipids laboratory to enhance the development of omega-3 oils and food products.
