Do consumers know what 'sustainable food' really means?

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, but sometimes words can help. In the case of photographer Douglas Gayeton’s project The Lexicon of Sustainability, "words are the building blocks for new ideas. They have the power to activate change and transform societies."

Gayeton’s project is based on a simple premise: "People can’t be expected to live more sustainable lives if they don’t even know the most basic terms and principles that define sustainability."

To help bridge the gap, Gayeton uses an overlay of words and descriptions on top of his portraits to tell the story of sustainable food systems and to outline where terms such as "cage free," "locavore," or "food justice" came from.  He talks about his work in this video, recently shot by Kim Johnson of Wild Matters Productions.
