The Environmental Working Group commissioned a two-year study of five minority women leaders in the environmental justice movement to find out just how "toxic" they are.
Though the women come from different geographical regions and ethnic backgrounds, they all tested positive for 35-60 percent of the 75 contaminants on the test list. The chemicals tested consisted mainly of environmental pollutants, industrial chemicals and synthetic cosmetic ingredients that EWG categorizes as under-regulated by the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
While bisphenol-A seems to be the toxin of the moment, as states line up to follow in Minnesota's footsteps in banning the controversial chemical from baby bottles and sippy cups, EWG is leading the charge to update the 33-year-old TSCA legislation to reflect the growing awareness of toxins in our daily lives, and it turns out, in our blood.
