Earth Day Challenge

That's right today is Earth Day -- the day when we celebrate the Earth and contemplate all the ways we can help our planet. So how can we do more this April 22? Accept our Earth Day challenge!

First, visit your local grocery store. The Go Organic campaign has partnered with more than 3,500 grocery stores in 35 states to increase consumer awareness of the benefits of going organic. Pick up a coupon book and learn about why organic is an Earth-wise choice.

Second, try to avoid purchasing anything plastic today.

"Yes it will be hard, and that's the point," says Gwen Kilvert, LEED AP, Outreach Project Consultant for New York-based SAIC Energy Solutions Division. "Water bottles, coffee-cup lids, food trays, cups, plastic wrap, plastic bags, jars, and toys are made of petroleum-based plastic. And despite what you think (and regardless of those recycling logos on the bottom of plastic items), plastic more times than not isn’t recycled. When you throw plastic away remember: There is no away. And think about this: Avoiding plastic may actually influence how manufacturers make their goods and sell them to us."
