Sara Lee is going green

OK, sort of. The company says it will convert one New Mexico bakery to solar energy. Meanwhile, Kraft uses a cream-cheese by-product to power a New York plant, reports Chicago Business. "At least 30% of shoppers look for environmentally friendly products and packages when selecting brands, according to a study released this month by Chicago-based market researcher Information Resources Inc.," says the report. It's just a start (how about reducing all that packaging?), but the point is that these and other large companies are responding to consumer demand for increased sustainability. Whether you choose to buy products from major players like Kraft and Sara Lee is up to you. But by simply asking our local stores, restaurants, coffee shops, drug stores to heighten their commitment to the environment, maybe we can all, as individuals, make a difference.
