Americans are more committed to taking their vitamins than other healthy habits, like eating a healthy breakfast, spending more time with friends and family, and the developing the all-important ability to maintain calm in traffic. A new survey by Harris Poll conducted on behalf of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) found that 47 percent of the 2,000 people surveyed about health and wellness habits they’re committing to this year said “taking vitamins” was a priority. It was the fifth most popular healthy habit listed.
One of the most interesting things about the poll is how people taking dietary supplements are also more likely to engage in other healthy habits, CRN vice president, communications, Judy Blatman, told Nutritional Outlook.
“It’s really the constellation of healthy habits that people are engaging in,” says Blatman. “They’re not just looking at one thing; they’re recognizing that there are a lot of different things that they need to do, and we feel very good about the fact that they recognize that taking vitamins or other supplements is one of those important things when it comes toward your health.”
What beat out vitamins in the survey? Drinking enough water (72 percent), eating healthier in general (66 percent), getting more physically active (62 percent) and getting more sleep (49 percent).
Another New Year’s survey, this one conducted by Prevention and Centrum, found that although more than 75 percent of Americans believe it is fairly easy to get recommended daily values of vitamins and minerals by eating a healthy, balanced diet, nearly half of those polled are concerned they may not be getting enough of one or more key nutrients.
