Diabetic foods like jams, biscuits and other treats sweetened with sugar substitutes were introduced in the 1960s, when it was believed that avoiding sugar was the best way to manage diabetes. Today, dieticians tend to frown on processed diabetic foods and instead promote individualized balanced diets and carbohydrate control as the best way to control blood glucose.
