Wyeth Under Investigation

Lawmakers in Michigan are investigating the legitimacy of advertising claims made by Wyeth to promote its Centrum Cardio vitamin product.

The debate hinges on Wyeth’s claim that the vitamin is “the only complete multivitamin that can lower cholesterol.”

Michigan state representatives John Dingell and Bart Stupak are seeking additional documentation from the company that would back its claim. "We are concerned that these statements may be misleading to the general public and that patients with high cholesterol may erroneously substitute Centrum Cardio for a treatment plan prescribed by their physician," the lawmakers contend.

Both democrat representatives chair the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce. They also sit on the subcommittee responsible for oversight and investigations. Wyeth’s Centrum Cardio was launched in October of 2007 amidst the rising popularity of phytosterols.
