Cannabis is the hottest new beverage inclusion. Cannabis terpenes are in alignment with the hoppy taste profile of beer, while high sugar concentrations in non-alcoholic beverages can mask the cannabis flavor profile in juices, carbonated drinks and fruit juices.

With CBD specifically, formulators are introducing the ingredient—either as isolates or as part of full-spectrum hemp—into all things liquid.

It’s not without its questions. John Torrens, president of Vertical Bioscience, a cannabis/CBD grower, asserts that CBD in beverages is a skeptical proposition because of the old adage that oil and water do not mix.

“CBD water is not water-soluble unless you can nano-scale it,” said Torrens. “You should be skeptical of it. The only way to get CBD out is to lick the bottle because CBD binds to something in the plastic. CBD will find its way to the plastic bottle. That’s another consumer education situation.”

Regardless, CBD is finding its way into any and every consumer comestible, so why not beverages? Here are eight new product introductions to whet your whistle.

Please note that CBD [isolate] under current FDA statements is not an approved food ingredient. Furthermore, FDA has concluded that CBD products are excluded from the dietary supplement definition. Products containing CBD isolate are prohibited for exhibit at Natural Products Expos and all New Hope paid advertising.
