European and Japanese consumers have embraced skin-health supplements as if they were bottled at the fountain of youth. Americans, however, have yet to completely embrace beauty-from-within help for fines lines, wrinkles, inflammation, age spots and sagging. BioCell Technology president Suhail Ishaq talks about the exciting opportunity for radiant sales.
Fi: What are your projections for the coming year?
SI: The global nutricosmetic market is estimated to be about $2 billion at an annual growth rate of more than 10 percent, which will sustain for the foreseeable future. Supplements for skin beauty-from-within have gained very broad consumer acceptance in Europe and Japan, where this mature market accounts for most of the worldwide sales. In contrast, the U.S. market remains at a very early stage of growth, presenting a tremendous opportunity as nutricosmetics are predicted to eventually become mainstream.
Fi: What’s going on in science?
SI: Active studies are underway to substantiate diverse ingredients for skin benefits, such as an antioxidant and photo-protective role for plant-derived polyphenols like flavonoids and phenolic acids. BioCell Technology has been conducting research, including human clinical trials, to substantiate our patented ingredient called BioCell Collagen, and demonstrated its safety and efficacy in improving skin health.
Daily ingestion of one gram for 12 weeks resulted in an increase in dermal collagen content and facial blood microcirculation. This led to a 75 percent reduction of skin dryness/scaling and a 13 percent decrease in fine lines and wrinkles.
Fi: How does your product fit into the big picture in this category?
SI: Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the body, especially the connective tissue, where it helps form the extracellular matrix together with glycosaminoglycans.
BioCell Collagen is highly differentiated from other healthy-aging ingredients in that it provides a synergistic and comprehensive approach, delivering a patented composition of biologically active hydrolyzed collagen type II, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid in a naturally occurring matrix form.

One of Pycnogenol®’s basic mechanisms is its ability to bind to the skin’s collagen and elastin, providing a wealth of benefits. The super-antioxidant inhibits collagen and elastin degradation and helps fight harmful free radicals in the process. The result is increased skin elasticity and smoothness and prevention against wrinkles.
