The quest for longevity is tantamount to a quest for better health across your body's entire physiology. Anti-ageing is cardiovascular health, a strong immune system, healthy gut flora and supple joints. As such, the anti-ageing sector covers a lot of ground in its fight against preventative age-related disease, from skin creams and cosmeceuticals to anti-cancer remedies and nutraceuticals with numerous health benefits.
Dan Lifton of Maypro Industries looks at the category this way: "We define anti-ageing products as those that address multiple age-related conditions, as opposed to single-function compounds. We include compounds that specifically slow, prevent or reverse the ageing process, and ingredients that help address a broad range of age-related conditions." Take Oliginol, Maypro's patented polyphenol derived from lychee fruit. Oliginol won the NutrAward at Nutracon 2008 for demonstrable benefits in healthy ageing, including reductions in visceral fat, wrinkles and fatigue, and improvements to the circulatory and cardiovascular systems.
Resveratrol continues to garner buzz in this sector. Recent press coverage in such mainstream venues as 60 Minutes and The Oprah Winfrey Show has consumers warming to the ingredient for its antioxidant properties and stimulation of the sirtuin gene set. Resveratrol's role as a mimetic for calorie restriction remains of particular focus with scientists. Cyvex Nutrition offers BioVin Advanced, a French red-wine extract from grapes grown in the Rhône Valley, and DSM Nutritional Products offers Resvida with 99 per cent pure trans-resveratrol. As resveratrol's star rises higher, there appears to be little it can't fix. Sabinsa's Resvenox, a natural extract of 95 per cent resveratrol for use in dietary supplements and cosmetics, offers significant benefit to cardiovascular health, immunity, energy, cognitive health, metabolism and skin health, plus antiviral protection.
Dosage remains problematic, however. Bill Sardi of Longevinex, an early supplier of resveratrol supplements, warns against overdoing it. He cites a recent study in Cell Metabolism in which mega-doses of pure resveratrol shortened animal lifespans by overinhibiting their tumor necrosis factor. "I fear sour headlines for resveratrol lie ahead," says Sardi, "as there are potential side effects. None grave — no liver toxicity reported — but mega-doses can cause Achilles' heel tendonitis, finger tingling and frontal headache. In some cases, resveratrol can overinhibit TNF factors and produce skin rash, stiff joints, flu-like symptoms and anxiety." He advocates modest doses of resveratrol complemented by a range of antioxidants such as quercetin and ferulic acid, as would be delivered by three to five glasses of red wine.
Curcumin presents another option in the fight against oxidative stress and inflammation. "The antioxidant effects of curcuminoids, combined with their known inhibitory effects on COX-2, render them useful as ingredients in anti-ageing formulations, and in topical formulations designed to maintain general skin health and integrity," says Lakshmi Prakash, PhD, vice president of innovation and business development at Sabinsa. "The anti-inflammatory role of curcuminoids is well establishedm" he says. Sabinsa's Curcumin C3 Complex is billed as a bioprotectant for its broad beneficial impact to the body.
Well-known for their role in wellness and urinary health, cranberries also contain powerful phytochemicals that combat age-related chronic disease, particularly cognitive and motor damage. With flavonoids providing high levels of antioxidants, and phenols scavenging for free radicals, it's the fruit that keeps on giving. Green tea, fish oil, sea buckthorn and pine bark are also gaining traction.
Anti-ageing may be a broad sector, but that might only add to its appeal. "As an ingredients supplier," says Matt Phillips, president and COO of Cyvex Nutrition, "we have to constantly be on the lookout for what categories are doing well in the marketplace. Eighty percent of Cyvex's R&D efforts are focused on finding and developing novel condition-specific ingredients for our customers." Everybody ages, and every body hurts.
