EFSA gives Albion a nod
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) rendered a positive opinion on the safety of Albion's manganese bisglycinate chelate when used as a source of manganese in dietary and food supplements. The EFSA concluded that routinely taking 4mg of manganese as manganese bisglycinate chelate was of no safety concern.

DSM teams with Tatarstan company
DSM Nutritional Products based in the Netherlands announces a new joint venture with Tanergo JSC (Republic of Tatarstan). The two have signed a letter of intent along with the government of Tatarstan for the construction of a micronutrient premix plant for animal nutrition.

NEC opens new facility
The National Enzyme Company's (NEC) new manufacturing facility is now open in Forsythe, Missouri. The centre, which is more than 10,000 square feet, will house NEC's encapsulation and blending departments for all the company's nutritional enzyme technology.


 

New website for Membrell
Membrell recently relaunched its website, www.membrell.com. The new site has an updated in—site navigation system and expanded educational content for consumers and retailers. The site also offers a free trial of some of Membrell's products.


 

Marketing alliance for beta—carotene
Farbest, of Montvale, New Jersey, will now market and distribute ZMC China's line of beta—carotene products in the United States, the companies said in a joint release. ZMC China's beta—carotene products are specifically formulated for dietary supplements, foods and beverages. They will be available in oil form and as encapsulated powders, the company says.


 

Nature's Path garners award
Cereal maker Nature's Path has been chosen as one of Canada's Greenest Employers in 2009 by Canada's Top 100 Employers, a guide to the best places to work in Canada. The award honours company initiatives, including giving one per cent of the sales of certain products to species and habitat conservation. It also recognizes the company's onsite organic employee garden, its ambitious zero—waste and carbon—reduction goals, and its $1,000 cash reimbursement to employees who purchase eco—friendly vehicles.


 

Autocrat expands volume capacity
Family—owned Autocrat has made a substantial investment in upgrading its coffee extraction system. By doing so it has substantially increased its volume capacity allowing it to better serve the rapidly growing functional—ingredients market.


 

BI Nutraceuticals ups efficiency
BI Nutraceuticals has reduced the size of its finished—goods shipping box, which will result in saving nearly 750,000lbs of wood per year. By shaving one inch of height off of the box, the company can now stack its pallets two boxes high requiring only one pallet for every 450kg of goods.

Allergy study for probiotics
Danisco and Turku University have unveiled the first study demonstrating that dietary supplementation with probiotic cultures may relieve symptoms of birch—pollen allergies. Symptoms such as a runny nose and nasal blockage were each alleviated by approximately 20 per cent.
