Pharmachem expands weight-control platform
Building on its Phase 2 Carb Controller platform, Pharmachem Laboratories, of New Jersey, has launched two new companion proprietary weight-management ingredients, Phase 1 Hunger Controller and Phase 3 Sugar Controller. Together the trio creates a unique, safe, clinically-studied system of weight-control products, Pharmachem says. Called The Three Phases of Weight Control, the ingredient system addresses the many ways consumers gain weight, whether overeating, consuming too many carbs or eating too much sugar. It gives the manufacturer the option of introducing the entire system, or offering them separately. Phase 1 Hunger Controller is a family of flavoured beverage powders containing Olibra, clinically shown to promote appetite control and satiety. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity showed that subjects who consumed foods containing Olibra had significantly reduced food intake at subsequent meals. Another study at Maastricht University, The Netherlands, showed the ingredient to be effective in helping subjects maintain their weight over a longer term of 18 weeks. Phase 2 Carb Controller is a proprietary extract of the white bean clinically shown to reduce the digestion of starches. Its efficacy and safety have been confirmed in more than two dozen separate studies. Phase 3 Sugar Controller is a powdered formula shown to be effective in supporting healthy blood-sugar levels. A new human study of Phase 3 Sugar Controller showed that 1.1g of the material had a significant effect on improving blood sugar and insulin levels after consumption of a beverage containing 70g of sugar.


Probiotics for juices
Danisco has developed two probiotic juice concepts that contain an effective dose of Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 strain. Test results have shown that the strains have a good survival rate in fruit juice over 40 days at 4 C. The company plans to develop the European market for the juices. Fermented dairy drinks have long been considered the ideal vehicle for delivering probiotic bacteria. Danisco's applications specialists have been working for some time on the introduction of the bacteria into juices, which will enable them to support manufacturing partners in new product development.


Low-viscosity soy protein isolate
Solbar Industries of Israel has launched a very low viscosity soy protein isolate. Solpro 842, a 90 per cent soy protein, is processed uniquely to meet the demands for soy crisps, extruded snacks and cereals. Solbar invested more than $1 million and 18 months in the development of a new technology to successfully produce Solpro 842. The result is a soy-protein isolate that has consistently low viscosity when subjected to the heat and shear of extrusion while maintaining a bland flavour profile, the company says.


African botanical for weight loss
Ecuadorian Rainforest, a New Jersey supplier of natural ingredients, is offering Irvingia gabonensis, an African botanical that has been clinically proven to assist with weight management and weight loss. Also known as wild mango and bush mango, Irvingia gabonensis has a positive impact on body weight and blood lipids, according to multiple studies. In a randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled investigation on obese subjects, Irvingia gabonensis was shown to significantly reduce body weight and improve metabolic parameters.


Quinoa beverage base
NFI Iowa, a new food-grade, ingredient manufacturing and R&D consulting facility, has developed a quinoa beverage base that is similar to milk and has 2-3 per cent protein and three per cent fat. This is a gluten-free product and is a base for nutritional drinks or soft-drink beverages. NuQuinoa Beverage Base is a whole-seed derived milk base prepared without additives. The product has a sweet taste and neutral flavour.
