Highly-Anticipated PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone) Finally Commercialized As VitaPQQ(TM) From Maypro Industries

PQQ identified as a ‘new vitamin’ by the prestigious scientific journal Nature
and described as a significant newcomer to the Vitamin B familly

October 31st, 2007 – Purchase, N.Y. – Hailed as a new vitamin by Nature1, VitaPQQ™ brand PQQ is now available from Maypro for use by vitamin and dietary supplement manufacturers. The launch of VitaPQQ™ is a critical milestone in a decades-long effort to commercialize Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ), a newly discovered vitamin that offers significant health benefits due to its vitamin-like activity, cognitive function and antioxidant capacity. VitaPQQ™ is manufactured utilizing a patented natural fermentation process.

“We are very excited to offer nutritional supplement manufacturers the opportunity to become a pioneer in introducing VitaPQQ™ to U.S. consumers,” says Steve Yamada, President of Maypro Industries, “The preliminary research is impressive and has demonstrated that PQQ is an essential nutrient that may benefit cognitive function related to memory loss.”

VitaPQQ™ brand PQQ was developed by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical of Tokyo, Japan, and Maypro will serve as its exclusive distribution partner in the United States. The launch of VitaPQQ™ builds on a successful 20-year partnership between Maypro and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical that established CoQ10 as one of the leading specialty ingredients in the United States.

History and Benefits of PQQ
PQQ was first discovered in 1979 as an essential cofactor for alchohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme that is responsible for helping the liver metabolize alcohol. Since its discovery, scientists have learned that PQQ is present in foods, beverages and in the human body, including breast milk. Foods containing PQQ are vegetables such as parsley, green peppers, spinach, potatoes and specific bean varieties. In 1987, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical initiated production of PQQ in limited quantities for research purposes. The published research completed showed PQQ-deficiency in mice, PQQ vitamin-like activity, neuroprotective function, nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis and inhibition of memory loss. In 2003, the prestigious journal Nature proclaimed PQQ as “A new redox-cofactor vitamin for mammals” leading up to commercial scale up and availability now in 2007. New research is forthcoming related to cognitive function as it relates to such conditions as memory loss, Parkinson disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

“We’re excited to be introducing this break-through ingredient that has already demonstrated so much potential for benefiting human health,” adds Yamada, “With aging populations in developed countries such as the United States, cognitive function is one of the most important areas in living a long, healthy and active lifestyle.”
VitaPQQ™ is manufactured under patent (U.S. Patent 5,344,768) and has an additional patent (U.S. Patent 5,846,977) related to its cognitive activity. VitaPQQ™ will be available by license in limited quantities for qualified supplement manufacturers.
