Non-GMO verified product sales increase 66% over last year
Sales of products with the non-GMO label show great growth over last year as organic continues its steady sales climb.

Recent statistics released by SPINS suggest that October 2012 just might be the most successful Non-GMO Month yet.

Sales of Non-GMO Project verified foods grew by 66 percent year over year for the past 52-week period, according to the market research firm. Recent-year sales totaled $2.4 billion, with more than $1 billion of that sold in three categories: chips, pretzels and snacks; nondairy beverages; and cold cereal.

Meanwhile, double-digit sales growth continues for organic products, with the recent 52-week report showing year-over-year growth of 12.2 percent, SPINS reported. The highest growth, 15.8 percent, occurred in natural supermarkets.

Oct. 31 marks the end of Non-GMO Month, which occurs every October to raise awareness about genetically modified organisms. The nonprofit Non-GMO Project established the observation and operates the nation’s only third-party non-GMO verification and labeling system. More than 6,000 products now carry the label.
