Is Procter & Gamble losing the innovation game?

Will cost cutting at the corporate level free up cash for investment in new product development at Procter & Gamble?

Considering P&G’s recent acquisition of New Chapter, one must wonder if acquiring a supplement company is their step towards better understanding and competing in health & wellness.

P&G reportedly has one of the more impressive CPG patent libraries.  Will they bring this history of innovation to the nutrition industry? 

NBJ believes P&G will bring big retail category management to some chain natural retailers to improve performance at the shelf, but what about all the “mom & pop” natural retailers out there?  What happens to them?  And what of the traditionally lower risk profile of large pharmaceutical and CPG firms compared to higher tolerances at natural products industry firms.  This will certainly be an issue, but if P&G is smart…and they certainly are…one can only expect smart moves from the historic leader of consumer good branding and marketing.
