Tornado relief 2014: Will you lend a hand?

At the request of state leaders, Nourish America launched its “healthy” relief effort to get nutritious foods and essential supplies directly into the hands of victims of last weekend’s tornados and storms that laid a path of destruction across six Southeastern states, killing over 35 people and injuring scores of others. Extensive damage was reported in Little Rock, Ark., Tupelo, Miss., and coastal regions in Alabama. In support of this disaster relief, Nourish America is asking for cash and product donations from the Natural Products Industry. Cash contributions can be made at nourishamerica.org.

Most foods and supplements of the Natural Products Industry are nutrient-dense, shelf-stable, pocket-sized and great tasting. In addition, body care and cleaning supplies are nontoxic. These qualities make natural products excellent and useful relief support items for victims dealing with the trauma of loss and the challenges of rebuilding a life. For this reason, Nourish America particularly welcomes donations from the natural products industry.

Nourish America has partnered with state leaders and emergency workers to assure that its relief items are received and well-used by disaster victims and emergency workers. These partners include the Honorable Asa Hutchison, former Undersecretary of Homeland Security and Arkansas gubernatorial candidate as well as Alabama State Senator Linda Coleman; Robin Read, former CEO and president of the National Foundation for Women’s Legislators as well as other community leaders.

Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Nourish America’s healthier relief effort has made an important impact on those it served.

“Within days of the 2011 tornado, we began receiving shipments of healthy food from Nourish America at a time when everyone felt it was our darkest. They sent us good foods that sustained hundreds of families when we had no homes, no utilities, not even water to drink or prepare a meal. Nourish America’s foods also left an impression on Alabama families of a new and healthier way of eating and one I look forward to continuing. I will always remember how Nourish America became a light at a time of darkness,” said Sen. Coleman.
