People taking a supplement with chromium may be less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, according to new research.
More than 29 million Americans, about 9 percent of the population, have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control. One out of three Americans are prediabetic. The risk of death for adults with diabetes is 50 percent higher than for people without the disease. Most diabetics have type 2 diabetes, where their bodies can’t use insulin properly.
Most cases of type 2 diabetes are preventable, according to the CDC. Researchers believe one of things that can help stave off the disease may be taking supplements that contain chromium. People who had taken a supplement with the mineral were less likely to have type 2 diabetes in a study published in the online version of the journal Nutrition.
About 15 years ago, chromium was popular among diabetics who believed that it lowered blood sugar. Research, at least on humans, however, hasn’t backed that up, according to the Nutrition article. In the new research, scientists analyzed data from the The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, filtering the subject group down to a cohort of 28,539 people. They concluded “that the odds of having Type 2 diabetes were lower in those who, in the previous 30 days, had consumed supplements containing chromium.” The results were noted in the Human Nutrition newsletter from Albion Human Nutrition.
Research published earlier this year in the journal Cell Reports found that vitamin D may fight diabetes and that vitamin D deficiency is linked more closely to the disease than obesity.
