As consumer interest grows in vegan alternatives reminiscent of traditional meat-based holiday favorites, plant-forward roasts are becoming more widely available in the natural foods channel.
In fact, a recent SPINS report indicates that the plant-based loaves and roasts category is worth $11 million. Vegan roasts, which are typically easy to prepare, can be found in both frozen and refrigerated store aisles. While both categories experienced growth, frozen roasts led the way.
Specifically, the data showed that sales of frozen plant-based loaves and roasts was the fastest growing subcategory within the multi-outlet and naturally enhanced channels, which grew to $8.3 million in the 52 weeks ending on Oct. 30, 2022. Though the sales of refrigerated plant-based loaves and roasts subcategory experienced less growth, at $2.69 million, this type of roast still offers several interesting and innovative centerpiece options.
In terms of product type in both the frozen and refrigerated categories, SPINS data showed that plant-based turkey were the most sought-after alternative meat version, bringing in $7.66 million in sales and growing by 5.7% during that same time period. Trailing turkey were plant-based roasts emulating chicken, beef and ham.
As consumers continue to seek entrees for family holiday gatherings, the wide selection of vegan options in the natural products market provides consumers with a multitude of meat-free alternatives.
