Many people may not realize that, in 1903, Standard Homeopathic Company, parent company to Hyland’s, Inc., was founded by eight pharmacists frustrated with waiting for medicines to arrive from pharmacies on the East Coast. These eight pharmacists hired George Hyland to open and run a pharmacy in Los Angeles to handle West Coast sales. Hyland then bought the business in 1910, initiating a tradition of pharmacists as owners or top managers of the company. This tradition continues today with a pharmacist serving as chief operations officer of the business and who makes himself and another pharmacist available 24/7 for consumer emergencies.
