Supplemental support for menopause

Beyond supplements for insomnia, moodiness, hot flashes and libido, menopausal women may want more help.

Menopause dramatically speeds up bone loss, so women in transition need to take a high-quality bone-health supplement that includes 1,500 mg of calcium and 400 to 800 IU of vitamin D, says women’s health specialist Hyla Cass, MD.

Menopausal women may also be interested in supplements that address the thinning hair and skin that often comes with waning estrogen. Cass recommends fish oil for skin health, as well as a new silicon ingredient called BioSil, which has been shown in multiple studies to possibly boost bone density and potentially improve skin and hair health, according to Cass.

An adrenal-boosting supplement—Laurie Steelsmith, ND, recommends one with ginseng and vitamin C—may help fight the fatigue associated with menopause.
