Canada’s proposed front-of-package nutrition labels take aim at saturated fat, sugar and sodium

Health Canada is seeking public feedback on its proposed labeling for packaged food products that would use colors and symbols to draw attention to products with concerning amounts of saturated fat, sugar or sodium. The government is hoping to nudge consumers to make healthier choices, and to encourage manufacturers to make products that don’t need the labels. Read more at Forbes…

 

P&G bets natural Pampers can help build trust with millennials

P&G has been one of the slower large CPG companies to build up its portfolio of natural and organic products. But now it’s moving; it recently acquired online deodorant brand Native and skin care company Snowberry. Now it’s preparing to launch Pampers Pure, a natural-ish diaper made without chlorine bleach, fragrance, parabens or latex, and seven-ingredient wet wipes. The diapers still contain absorbent gel and the wipes still contain preservatives and pH buffers, but P&G hopes they’ll appeal to the majority of consumers who are willing to pay a premium for products free of allergens and ingredients they can’t pronounce. Read more at Bloomberg…

 

Organic grocers dig in to survive Amazon-Whole Foods battlefield

“Amazon is actually decreasing pressure on a store like ours,” says Stephen Mitchell, managing partner and general manager at Good Earth Natural Foods in California’s Marin County. Instead, he sees customers shifting from shopping at Whole Foods to shopping at Good Earth, which sells only organic items in its produce, café, bakery and bulk departments. “People are looking for a more intimate touch” after the “corporatization of our industry, changes over there and apprehension it has generated,” he said.
