How prescribing healthy food could save billions in healthcare costs

A new study has determined that food-based prescription models would cause patients to rely far less on expensive healthcare in the long run. Researchers also looked into patient benefits on the health and wellness front and discovered that “subsidizing fruits and veggies would prevent 1.93 million cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and 350,000 deaths.” These and several other findings in the study suggest that the “food is medicine” mentality long-held in the natural products community is the way forward. Read more at Market Watch …

Record flooding in the Midwest has disrupted many large agricultural operations in the area—and likely ended the livelihoods of the area's small farmers. Seasonally, these floods came just as farmers were preparing spring planting, which requires dry weather to successfully get the seeds into the ground. Conagra expands its plan for zucchini noodles in bid for carb replacements

Another instance of big food leaning into the keto trend—Conagra Inc. is adjusting to changing consumer preferences by “focusing on carb replacements for Pinnacle’s frozen vegetable brand Bird’s Eye.” CEO Sean Connolly today revealed his plan of action for Bird’s Eye and other currently struggling brands in the company’s portfolio and subsequently sent its shares up to the highest they’ve been since 1989. Read more at Bloomberg …

 

Herbal Essences’ Beach Plastic collection bottles are made from recycled plastic cleaned from beaches

The company has teamed up with TerraCycle to implement bottles that will be made with 25 percent recycled plastic sourced from beaches. Herbal Essences estimates it will save three tons of beach plastic from ending up in landfills through this limited-edition line. Read more at Bustle …

 

EWG’s 2019 shopper’s guide to pesticides in produce

The Environmental Working Group found that more than 90 percent of samples of strawberries, apples, cherries, spinach, nectarines and kale tested positive for residues of two or more pesticides. Avocado and sweet corn, on the other end of the spectrum, were found to be the cleanest, with less than 1 percent of samples showing any detectable pesticides. Read more at EWG …
