Voters expect a sustainable farm bill for all

Most city dwellers and suburbanites probably don’t realize how the federal Farm Bill affects their lives: It sets the rules on organic foods, reduced or free school lunches, SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) and, of course, farming issues including sustainable agriculture, conservation programs and funding for industrial farms. The current Farm Bill expires at the end of September—the same day that Major League Baseball’s season ends—but the possibility of a new bill being in place that day is slimmer than the odds of the last-place Baltimore Orioles winning 50 games this season. California makes people ask for straws, sodas with kid meals

If a sea turtle gets a plastic straw stuck in its nostril, does anyone care until its photo goes viral on social media? After a summer of nationwide hand-wringing about sea turtles, plastic straws and the needs of disabled people, California Gov.
