This is the U.S. county that buys the least healthy groceries

You may be surprised—it’s Musselshell County in south central Montana, according to a new study that analyzed 12 years of Nielsen grocery purchase data from 100,000 U.S. households. The economists behind the study also wanted to find out what happened to grocery purchases when a new, full-service grocery store opened in a food desert. It turns out, not a lot. What they found did change a lot in their study, though, was demand for healthy foods in communities with higher income, education and nutrition knowledge. Some of the healthiest counties included New York County and Pitkin County, Colorado. Other least-healthy counties include Menominee County, Wisconsin, and Turner County, Georgia. Read more at Washington Post…

 

Whole Foods unveils first campaign following Amazon acquisition

“Whatever Makes You Whole,” is the title of the new campaign—Whole Foods’ biggest ever—which comprises several 15-second spots that will appear on TV and digital platforms. It's focused on shoppers who aren’t your typical natural food junkies, like a bearded former vegan who declares he’s now paleo, a dad who forgets why he went to the store in the first place and a novice cheese shopper. While Whole Foods has focused former campaigns on quality and integrity, VP of marketing Sonya Gafsi Oblisk said the retail chain is hoping to “move the brand to a much more human place … but also have a strong nod to the individuality and diversity of everyone that loves the brand.” Read more at AdAge…

 

A look back at 2017 food recalls

Undeclared allergens continue to dominate food recalls; 218 food products were pulled from shelves last year because of them. Milk is the top undeclared allergen by far, followed by egg, soy, almond and peanut. Mushrooms are good for you, but are they medicine?

Did you know there are more than 2,000 species of edible mushrooms on the planet? In the lab, researchers have found promising benefits related to cancer treatment and reduction of insulin resistance in mice. In humans, the research has been less prolific but still somewhat promising. Shiitake mushrooms have demonstrated ability to extend the lives of stomach cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, for example, and other mushroom extracts have been shown to strengthen the immune system of some breast cancer patients. Read more at NPR…
