Aker BioMarine Antarctic announces that a review article on the beneficial effects of krill oil and marine phospholipids has been published. The wide range of health effects by cardiovascular health, obesity, inflammation, brain health and liver health. To that end, this new review summarizes the findings from 137 papers and book chapters.
The review highlights the most important findings within the biological effects of marine phospholipids in both animals and humans, which have been documented in 31 different studies. In this regard, the authors describe the difference between omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils and the phospholipid form of omega-3 fatty acids. A number of studies have revealed that the omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil, which are mainly in phospholipid form, are a more efficient tissue delivery form of these essential fatty acids as compared to the triglyceride-bound omega-3s found in most fish oils.
"A number of studies document that there is a higher uptake of omega-3 fatty acids from krill oil into several tissues, especially when compared with the uptake from fish oil. This has specifically been shown for the brain, liver and kidney", said Dr. Kjetil Berge, one of the authors of the manuscript.
"The research on the nutritional importance and efficiency of marine phospholipids is still in its infancy, but the available literature in the field describes clear and interesting differences between triglyceride and phospholipid forms of omega-3 fatty acids", added Dr. Sebastiano Banni, coauthor and one of the pioneers in krill and marine phospholipids research.
Aker BioMarine is one of few krill ingredient marketers that is primary in its supply. Aker's proprietary Eco-Harvesting technology and on-board processing result in the unique composition of Superba Krill and provide full traceability from sea to shelf. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has granted certification to Aker's fisheries, an exclusive distinction that no other krill fishery has earned. As part of an established commitment to substantiating krill's health benefits, Aker continues to sponsor in vitro, in vivo and human clinical trials with phospholipid omega-3s from krill, consistently demonstrating a higher uptake of these fatty acids, improved blood lipid profiles and increased uptake of DHA in brain tissue.
