Cognis, “Your Kind of Supplier,” for Innovation Combined with Healthy Indulgence

Cognis Nutrition & Health is shining the spotlight on its “know how” in turning wellness and sustainability into new foods and beverages, at the 2010 IFT annual Meeting and Food Expo. Cognis is the exclusive sponsor of the IFT key focus track, “Food, Health & Nutrition,” featuring applied nutrition research, new science and market trends associated with the development of functional foods to maintain and/or improve health.

“Industry experts from around the world travel to IFT to learn the latest trends and most recent scientific innovations, and Cognis is a first stop for many based on our track record of helping to create some of world’s leading health-enhancing foods and beverages,” said Sharrann Simmons, Marketing Director, NA, Cognis Nutrition & Health.

She explained that Cognis is showcasing several Chicago favorites among its innovation concepts as a fun way to demonstrate the company’s expertise in adding wellness ingredients to a wide variety of applications. She explained that Chicago is home to two major league baseball teams, the Cubs and the White Sox, and attendees are encouraged to vote on their favorite by selecting cookies with team logos to boost the “score” which will be tallied daily. One lucky raffle winner will receive a Chicago Cubs jersey signed by star infielder Ryan Theriot.

Newtrition Delivers Well-Being to Consumers

Cognis‘ innovative new products and concepts at IFT are the natural implementation of the company’s “Newtritionstrategy. Cognis defines Newtrition as “modern nutrition with a feel-good factor” and each of the concepts at IFT is associated with one of Newtrition‘s well-being benefits including: vitality, protection, and beauty. The Newtrition strategy is intended to help consumers achieve their health and wellness goals by delivering the well-being benefits they demand in the everyday foods they crave.

Upturn in Functional Foods

“We are seeing increased interest across the board from customers accelerating development of new or improved products that incorporate our Newtrition concepts,” said Ms. Simmons. “The recent Novel Foods approval for plant sterols in Canada is just one example of how expanding regulatory approval is paving the way for the launch of new functional foods that resonate with consumers. Last year, Cognis obtained regulatory success in China where Tonalin® CLA now has Novel Foods approval.”

In addition to growing regulatory approval, she pointed out that consumer demand for science-based natural ingredients is also driving interest in Cognis products and concepts. With a longstanding history of experience in specialty natural ingredients, Cognis is well positioned to deliver sustainable products including the following natural ingredients: Covitol® vitamin E, Heart Choice® phytosterols, Xangold® lutein esters, Omevital omega-3, and Covi-Ox® antioxidants.

Beta-Glownatural beta-carotene, is an excellent natural alternative to artificial colors providing valuable benefits for both manufacturers and clean labels for consumers. The rising consumer preference for natural ingredients is fuelled by the debate on synthetic versus natural colors as well discussed in the much-debated "Southampton study". Published in The Lancet in November 2007, researchers concluded that six synthetic colors can aggravate hyperactivity in children.

Increased consumer preference for natural ingredients has been well confirmed by major market researchers including Euromonitor and Freedonia Group. According to Business Insights Report, March 2010, the appetite for natural ingredients that can deliver health benefits to the substantial number of consumers seeking wellness remains high and will remain strong as the population ages.

Omevital Omega-3 Portfolio

Cognis‘ Omevital portfolio offers multiple product types including a microencapsulated powder, ideal for dry mix applications. “Our Omevitalproduct line has a superior flavor profile thanks to our heritage in deodorizing and stabilizing lipid ingredients. Omevitalproducts offer omega-3 functionality combined with application expertise in both formulation and processing,” Ms. Simmons said.
