A First For Lycopene
Healthy Origins, a Pittsburgh-based manufacturer of specialty supplements to the health food industry, has begun the first clinical trial on Lyc-O-Mato Lycopene to explore the effects of tomato lycopene complex and soy isoflavones on prostate health. Researchers at H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, are conducting the study, which is being funded by the National Cancer Institute.
Soerensen Heads Eu Expansion
Fortitech Inc, a custom nutrient systems supplier, has appointed Jens Skytte Soerensen as managing director of the newly formed Fortitech Europe ApS. The company was formed in June 2002 following a joint venture with BASF AG for the manufacture, marketing and sales of human nutrition premix products. The company is constructing a new facility in Nilose, Denmark, which is due for completion by the end of 2003.
NIH Tests Tocotrienols
The National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded more than $1 million to Ohio State University Medical Center to investigate Carotech's Tocomin Full Spectrum Toco-trienol Complex. Researchers will study how this palm-derived vitamin E—alpha-tocotrienol—helps protect against inducible neuronal cell death. It is the first NIH-funded study on alpha-tocotrienol. In previous research on Tocomin, scientists concluded that tocotrienols cross the blood-brain barrier and are potent protectors of neuron cells that may be killed due to stroke and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Cognis Gets An Exclusive
Cognis, a global specialty chemicals and nutritional ingredients company, and Natural ASA, a Norwegian research and development company, have signed an agreement that grants Cognis an exclusive license in the key markets for Natural's conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) intellectual property, technology and know-how, along with an exclusive license to use the Tonalin trademark. Under the agreement, Cognis will have exclusive rights to the worldwide marketing and manufacturing of Natural's products and technology for dietary supplements, food ingredients, pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals.
Lauder Goes Irish
AMINO GmbH of Germany, which produces amino acids and other natural value-added ingredients, has appointed Norman Lauder Lt. as its new distributor in Ireland as part of the company's global expansion. Lauder will supplement the AMINO network with enhanced customer service.
Stanley W Jacob, MD, FACS, medical director for Cardinal Nutrition Inc, the largest licensed manufacturer of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), was recently named one of the Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century by members of the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. Jacob, who has been studying MSM for more than four decades, is the Gerlinger Chair of Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University Medical School and an instructor of surgery at Harvard Medical School.
Line Appointed VP
Florida-based US Nutraceuticals LLC, which manufactures supercritical fluid extracts for nutraceuticals and functional foods, has appointed Larry L Line to the position of international vice president. Line previously was president of La Haye Laboratories Inc, which recently sold its astaxanthin business to US Nutraceuticals.
Cranberries Get COO
Decas Cranberry Products Inc, based in Wareham, Massachu-setts, has promoted Jeffrey Carlson to chief operating officer after six years as vice president of operations. He is the former executive director of the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association and was an employee of the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture for 10 years.
As part of its restructuring plan, Hauser Inc of Long Beach, California, and Longmont, Colorado, has sold its Shuster Laboratories division to Specialized Technology Resources Inc for approximately $7 million. The acquisition will enable Specialized Technology Resources to expand its services in research, development, testing, quality assurance, dietary supplements and personal care products.
The Ultra Source Of Life
Georgia-based Thione International, which produces clinically tested Thione Complex for cellular health, has partnered with Natural Organics, makers of Ultra Source of Life multivitamins. Thione Complex will be incorporated into Ultra Source of Life to enhance the product's antioxidant properties.
