New quality manager
Embria Health Sciences has appointed Curt Hale as quality manager. He will report to Embria's vice president of scientific affairs, Larry Robinson. Hale has more than three decades of quality experience, including more than 20 years with General Mills. He also has served as a consultant in the areas of food safety, allergens and entomology, and as an examiner for the Baldrige National Quality Award.
India bestows R&D award
Laila Impex, an herbal-products manufacturer in India, has won the Indian government's National Award for Outstanding In-house R&D Achievement. The award recognized the development and commercialization of 5-Loxin, an anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic product. The company is a strategic alliance partner of PL Thomas.
Steaz named '07's Best Energy Drink
Steaz Energy, introduced in 2007 as the world's first certified-organic and fair trade-certified energy drink, was named Best Energy Drink of 2007 by BevNet. The line, which includes lime, orange and diet berry flavours, contains half the sugar and calories of traditional sodas, without using any additives or artificial sweeteners.?The drink includes Guayaki's yerba mate, Sambazon's Brazilian power fruit, açai, and a touch of guarana for a sustained energy boost.
Distributor in Turkey
BI Nutraceuticals has selected the Safir Group to be the exclusive distributor of its ingredients in Turkey. BI's 700-plus ingredient offerings include organics, whole-herb powders and teas, herbal extracts, vitamins, minerals, and speciality ingredients.
Açaí supply agreement
Açaízone, a supplier of raw materials, clarifies, distillates and powders from exotic fruits, has announced an agreement to provide GCI Nutrients with high-grade organic açaí clarified and juice powder (water soluble)?for use in a variety of nutraceutical products. Açaí (Euterpe oleracea) is a palm berry high in antioxidants and omega fatty acids.
Solbar Industries instituted a management restructure in January to strengthen sales efforts and invest in business development. Among the changes are: Assaf Gadish, appointed vice president of sales and supply chain; adn Gary Brenner, appointed vice president of marketing and development.
Sales and marketing in Canada
InterHealth Nutraceuticals has entered into an agreement with Nealanders International to manage the sales and marketing of InterHealth's products in Canada. Nealanders is headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. Customers will be able to order both InterHealth and Nealanders products from a single source and benefit from expedited shipping.
Lutein ester process patent
BioActives of Massachusetts was issued a patent for its process of preparing lutein-ester concentrate. The process can lead to as much as a 50 per cent cost savings for customers, the company says. As a result of this patent, BioActives is now offering licenses to lutein ester users, distributors or processors.
Plant opening in Canada
Lonza has celebrated the opening of its newly acquired plant in Shawinigan, Canada. The plant is dedicated to the production of Pro-K, which is a new addition to Lonza's nutrition portfolio. The plant has also passed its ISO-9001-2000 and FAMI-QS certification audit.
New tech specialist, research associate
Jarrow Formulas has hired Brad Douglass, PhD, as its new technical specialist and Lisa Schultz as research associate. Douglass obtained his PhD from the University of Southern California in organic chemistry. For his postdoctorate fellowship, he investigated novel blood-brain barrier transport methods for use in drug delivery to the brain. Schultz earned a bachelor's in nutrition with an emphasis in dietetics from Arizona State University.
Branded platform launched
SourceOne Global Partners has developed a competitive-platform, branded Cholesstrinol, for its multiple-proprietary heart-healthy combinations. Branding these combinations under one name is designed to leverage their scientific basis. Cholesstrinol is an all-encompassing platform that provides numerous targeted and customized solutions for consumers with specific cardiovascular concerns, the company says, and includes combinations of patented and proprietary ingredients such as high-potency omega-3s, phytosterols, co-Q10 and gamma tocopherol.
IMG teams up with supplier
Integrated Marketing Group has begun a working relationship with All American Pharmaceutical to provide marketing and branding services for the full-service ingredients supplier and contract manufacturer. The agency's public-relations staff will conduct media relations, and trade-show promotion, and increase awareness of the company's patented, pH-correct creatine products, including Kre-Alkalyn and Kre-Celazine.
NSF awards GMP registration
NSF International Good Manufacturing Practices registration has been awarded to Ningbo Green-Health Pharmaceutical. The company is a primary manufacturer for AM Todd Botanical Therapeutics, a major botanicals-extracts supplier. Ningbo Green-Health is a privately held Chinese manufacturer of botanical extracts, nutritional-supplements ingredients and pharmaceuticals for the European, Japanese and US markets.
Partnership propels ingredient
Avebe and DSM have formed a strategic partnership combining DSM's enzyme expertise and Avebe's starch knowledge. The partnership has already led to the development of Etenia, a natural, clean-label ingredient derived from potato starch, designed for a variety of applications. Avebe is marketing Etenia in dairy applications and has introduced the product to the European market.
Fortium wins brand award
The Frost & Sullivan Award for Brand Development Strategy Leadership in the European rosemary-extracts market goes to Kemin Industries' Food Ingredients division for Forium. "Having understood the competitiveness of the rosemary-extracts market, Kemin has positioned its Fortium brand as a natural antioxidant solution based on rosemary and tocopherols for use in various applications such as meat, fats and oils," the award committee says.
Joint venture for Indian ingredients
Nutraceuticals International (NI)and Amruta Herbals have formed a joint venture to develop, market and sell indigenous Indian products. NI has secured the rights to exclusive supply of Amruta's variety of powdered extracts, soft extracts, granule extracts and standardised oil extracts, as well as an entire line of propylene-glycol extracts for cosmetic use. The two companies are developing new extracts and products in Amruta's facilities, including standardized Ayurvedic herbal extracts, standardized oil extracts and propylene-glycol extracts.
