The International Probiotics Association Names New Executive Director

San Francisco, CA, June 1, 2007 – The International Probiotics Association (IPA) has announced the hiring of a new Executive Director. On May 1, 2007, Ioannis Misopoulos commenced his position as the new Executive Director of IPA. Additionally, the non-profit organization’s headquarters will be officially relocated to Chicago, IL, on June 15. Misopoulos previously worked as the International Sales Manager, Soyfoods Division, at Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Co. located in Decatur, IL. He received his B.Sc. in Environmental Science in 1999 at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and his Master’s degree in Food Science from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln in 2001.

“I am very excited about this opportunity both professionally and personally,” says Misopoulos. “Probiotics are becoming more widely accepted and mainstream to our diet and overall health. I am very happy to be spearheading this effort and am looking forward to a successful tenure with the IPA. One of my top priorities is for the IPA to be recognized by consumers, health professionals and the industry as the authority in probiotics worldwide.”

The International Probiotics Association, a non-profit trade group, was founded in 2001 by Jarrow Formulas (Los Angeles, CA) and became fully active in 2005 in order to create a powerful network amongst researchers, academia, manufacturers, and marketers who are involved in the probiotic supply chain (clinical research, culture production, and finished goods). The interest and growth rate of probiotics and related functional foods over the past several years warranted the founding of a new trade organization that could assist in bridging the communication gap between industry members, international regulatory agencies, and researchers, while simultaneously helping to educate consumers on the documented benefits of probiotics. IPA provides a forum for the exchange of clinical information, highlights new product development, establishes scientific standards, and educates consumers and healthcare practitioners on the documented health benefits of probiotics for humans and animals.

The Founding Industry Members of IPA include: Jarrow Formulas, Institut Rosell/Lallemand, DSM, Danisco, Chr. Hansen, Nature’s Way, Fonterra, Bio-K Plus, Nestle Purina, Harmonium International, Lifeway Foods, and Morinaga Milk Industry.
