This week: AFS introduces 2 organic extracts | A new algae-based fish oil alternative

New product and company launches, certifications and other natural products company news this week.

Applied Food Sciences Inc. will introduce two new organic ingredients—an organic ginger extract, PurGinger, and an organic vitamin C extract, Pur-C—next week.

AlgaPrime DHA, a new algae-based alternative to fish oil developed by TerraVia Holdings and Bunge Limited, addresses the declining omega-3 content in farmed salmon. As an alternative to ingredients like fish oil and fishmeal that come from small oily fish, AlgaPrime DHA hopes to ease the industry’s reliance on wild fish capture and help preserve the marine environment.  

In November, Dave's Killer Bread (Flowers Foods) and Cascade Organic Flour teamed up with the Organic Food Donation Partnership to donate approximately 20,000 pounds of organic potatoes and 3,000 loaves of organic bread for Thanksgiving meals to Food Lifeline in Seattle.

Nutraceutical formulator The Rhema Group is closing its Ogden manufacturing facility at the end of the year and consolidating its Vancouver operations in mid-2017 to a more efficient nearby facility in order to put a strategic focus on patented product innovation and formulation development. Its contract manufacturing services, rather than being the predominant focus of the business, will become a value-added service.

Algatechnologies Ltd, a supplier of natural astaxanthin sourced from microalgae, is part of a new initiative that will work to transform the way food is produced and consumed. It will work with European Institute of Innovation & Technology to develop new food sources from microalgae. Over the next seven years, the partners will invest close to 1200 million euros matched with up to 400 million euros financed by the EIT. 

A new all-in-one superfood product from Hanah Life includes 30 herbs, botanicals and superfruits that are wild harvested in India.
